Harvest Turnips at the Right Time

Harvest the turnips as per your need in the early fall. Harvest only those who have flourished properly and are ready to be cooked. Once the root of the vegetable has reached to an average diameter of about 3 inches, then they are ready to be harvested.

How to Store Turnips?

The greens that you remove from the roots too can be eaten so do no throw them away. The roots, as well as the green leaves that are at the top of turnip, can be eaten. Firstly remove the stem and then wash the greens properly in cold water and eliminate all the extra moisture that the greens hold which is not required.

Once you have cleaned the greens in cold water, add some salt in the water and let it settle down for about five minutes. Adding salt to water and letting it settle on the greens is important because it will help to kill the insects that might have stuck to the leaves. Wash it for one last time properly before zipping it inside a zip lock bag. You can also put it inside a plastic bag.

After you have washed it thoroughly, you can store it in a zip lock bag and push it inside the fridge. You can store them for about five days at 32 to 40 degrees Fahrenheit inside the fridge. This is done for those roots which you might need in the next couple of days. Do not forget to store the turnips in the crisper drawer of the fridge.

Just in case, you do not want to use these turnips in the near days then you don’t have to wash them right now. Instead of washing it stores it in a box which has a single layer and places the box or container in a cold and dark place inside your house.  The place which you choose to store the roots should have proper ventilation facilities so that the strong odor of turnip can be scattered and the place does not stink.

Try to avoid storing turnip roots with their tops. This will lead to its rot. IT is also similar when you don’t pack it densely. However, you follow the guidelines properly then you can store turnips for a longer period.

There is also one other way through which you can store turnips. You can store the roots in a root cellar after covering it in sawdust. Turnips remain intact in the root cellar and storing it in a root cellar is a very effective way. This is because of the humidity level present in it which helps it to store the turnips for long.

Storing it in a root cellar is a much better way than storing it inside the crisper drawer of the fridge.
