Tips for Designing Garden Seating Areas

Having a well-designed seating area in your garden can be a great place to socialize or get away from the suffocation of being locked inside for too long.  Gardens can also have a cooling effect around the house which is ideal for warmer climates as well as the morning and evening.  If you want to create a seating area in your garden, there are a number of tips you should know to design it correctly.

Get the Best View

The location for the seating area should be one that gives you the best view of the garden or a location that looks at the best part of the garden.  A trellis with a climbing plant is generally a great focal point for your seating area.  You should also consider aligning your garden seating area with your favorite part of the garden.

If you have any features in your garden such as a water feature, you should consider this when designing your seating.  Water features are beautiful to look at and they will help to bring the temperature of the garden down.  This is something you need to consider if you live in a warm climate.

Have Robust Flooring

You can set your seating area apart from the garden by using the right flooring.  There are a lot of options available for you to use including gravel, wood and stone.  It is recommended that you consult with an expert to help you choose the right flooring for your garden and for your budget.

The flooring you use needs to be waterproof and easy to clean.  You also need to ensure that it is able to endure the weather in the area.  This will ensure that you have lower maintenance costs which are something that can take the fun out of the area. If you want a nostalgic feeling to the area, you should consider using cobblestones.

Look for Shady Comfort

If you have tall plants, bushy foliage or trees in your garden, you should take advantage of them and place your seating area under them.  There are many plants that provide a lot of shade and you should consider planting them.  Natural shade is often better than artificial shade because you get the cooling benefits of the plants.

If you do not have any shade giving plants in your garden, you can make your own shade.  Using a beach umbrella is one option or you could create a canopy.  If you have fabric in your home you can use it for a makeshift canopy when you are outside.

Get Weather Proof Furniture

Your seating area needs to have sturdy and weatherproof furniture.  The furniture should not rust or rot as it is exposed to water and should not fade in the sunlight.  Glass topped tables and powder coated metal chairs may be the best solution for your seating area. Stone benches like these from Outdoor Art Pros are also a nice option. If you want a more natural look, you can consider rattan furniture with fabric cushions.

Bright At Night

Relaxing in your garden late into the night can be very pleasant.  To ensure that you are not sitting in the dark, you should add fairy lights or standing lamps to the area.  You can also add candles or table lamps when you have people over.

Have Alternative Seating

The furniture you have in your garden should relate to how you use the space.  If you like spending hours reading in the garden, you should look at sunbeds that are weatherproof and comfortable.  Swings can also appeal to adults and children while creating a great spot for social gatherings.

Regardless of the size of your garden, you should consider having seating.  Designing your seating area correctly can create a relaxing space that the whole family can enjoy.
